It’s National Card & Letter Writing Month

April 12, 2023 by Gini Wietecha

Did you know that April is National Card and Letter Writing Month? We know, we know, it’s not the most exciting holiday of the year – there are no sing-along songs, decorations, parades, or anything. But, here at DaySpring, we think it is an important occasion that deserves to be acknowledged and celebrated.

We all know that in this day and age, handwritten notes are a rarity. Many of us rely on electronic forms of communication. After all, it only takes a few moments to send a quick “thank you” email, or a last-minute “happy birthday” text. However, the handwritten note is thought-provoking and personal. It takes time and a stamp and a trip to the post office. But ask yourself which message stands out to you most: one of 200 or so currently in your inbox, or the two handwritten notes on your desk? Thought so.

In honor of National Card and Letter Writing Month, we thought it would be nice to give you four reasons why DaySpring believes in the significance of the handwritten card:

  1. Greater Impact – We all know how great it feels to open our mailbox and see that one piece that isn’t junk mail or a bill. The thought that a friend or loved one went out of their way to write you a heartfelt message can turn your whole day around. It just means more.
  1. Passes the Test of Time – While electronic forms of communication can easily be deleted, handwritten cards are kept, stored, and cherished. Think about it – how awesome is it to find love letters written back and forth between your grandparents, or to find a card your uncle gave you when you were 2 years old? A handwritten card can continue to warm your heart for years and years.
  1. Reflection – In today’s fast-paced world, handwritten notes remind us to slow down a bit. Some consider handwriting to be soothing, a natural way to capture their feelings, and a beautiful time to reflect on their love and appreciation for another.
  1. Sincerity – The feelings conveyed in handwriting are often more beautiful than those conveyed in typing. There’s just something about sitting down with a pen and paper that allows you to get in touch with your true, honest feelings. And, when you can write from your heart it just means so much more to the one receiving it.

Today, we encourage you to join us in celebrating National Card and Lettering Writing Month! Pick up a pen and paper and write a heartfelt note or card to someone you miss, someone you love, or someone who recently helped you. Let them know how grateful you are to have them in your life. You never know who you are going to impact – whether it be your friend, her children, her grandchildren, or even her future self years down the road… The impact could be immeasurable.
