Peppermint Puppy Chow Recipe

December 2, 2021 by Mary & Martha Home Office

Whether you call it puppy chow, monkey munch, or DIY Muddy Buddies, nothing tops powdered sugar smothered over Chex and melted peanut butter chocolate (we’re drooling just thinking about it)…

Well… unless you add peppermint to it. And make it a Christmas treat. That might top it.

Nancy C. has given a twist on this crowd-pleasing snack by making it a new holiday staple in our homes. This is a fun memory-making recipe to make with the kids or a sweet treat to serve at a family get-together.

Prep Time: 25 min
Bake Time: None

Ingredients:
  • 6 cups Rice Chex™ cereal
  • 12 oz. white chocolate (use white chocolate baking bars; vanilla baking chips do not melt well)
  • 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract
  • 1 1/4 cups crushed candy canes (about 17)
  • 1 1/3 cups powdered sugar
  • Optional add-ins: 2/3 cup Christmas sprinkles or 1 1/2 cups mini holiday M&Ms®
Instructions:
  1. Put 6 cups of Rice Chex™ cereal into a large bowl. Melt the white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl in 20-second increments, stirring after each time, until chocolate is melted (be careful not to overheat).

  2. Quickly stir the peppermint extract into the melted chocolate, then pour over cereal, stirring gently until cereal is fully coated. Add in the crushed candy canes and stir again. If using Christmas sprinkles, stir those in too.

  3. Add the powdered sugar into an extra-large (2 gallon) zip top bag; then add the cereal mixture, which will still be warm, and seal the bag. Shake the bag until the mixture is evenly coated with powdered sugar. If using the M&Ms®, add those to the bag and shake to combine with cereal mixture.

  4. Let mixture cool for 20 to 30 minutes. Serve in snack-size bowls or package in treat bags for giving! You can store this snack mix at room temperature in a zip-top bag or sealed container for up to two weeks.
